The CBSE conducted a capacity building programme for teachers on Social-Emotional Skills, with the objective of equipping participants with an understanding of emotional awareness, self-management, empathy, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Social-emotional learning (SEL) plays a critical role in empowering learners to understand themselves, connect meaningfully with others, and navigate life with empathy, resilience and emotional awareness.

The programme provided a platform for 56 participants, seated across eight tables, to engage in meaningful discussions, collaborative activities and personal reflection.

The resource persons conducted insightful and engaging sessions, drawing upon their expertise and practical experiences. The first session began with an exploration of the SEL Iceberg Model, wherein participants collaboratively identified visible student behaviours and reflected upon the emotions and possible underlying reasons behind such behaviours. An introspective activity, which encouraged participants to close their eyes and reflect on their current state of mind, prompted them to examine their own understanding of happiness and emotional well-being.

Handouts covering six important aspects of SEL were distributed among the groups. Participants read the material aloud, made notes and engaged in open discussions. The topics covered included: What is Social-Emotional Learning?; the multi-faceted benefits of SEL for students, teachers and parents; SEL core competencies; Plutchik’s Emotion Wheel; emotional learning standards at different school levels; and the scope and approaches to SEL advocated by CBSE, NCERT and UNESCO.

The afternoon session featured a short video focusing on self-motivation, self-management and relationship skills, followed by discussions on classroom dynamics through the lens of SEL. Participants engaged in personal reflection and explored the benefits of integrating SEL into everyday classroom practices. Collaborative exercises further enabled them to examine practical ways of incorporating social-emotional skills into teaching and learning.

Videos focusing on sharing, caring and finding joy in relationships, along with a revisit to the much-loved Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiya, encouraged participants to reflect on the values of empathy, cooperation, social responsibility and problem-solving.

The final segment focused on mental health and psychological disorders, highlighting the importance of early identification, screening and timely intervention. The session reinforced the significance of emotional well-being as an integral component of students’ holistic development.

The capacity building programme proved to be an enriching and interactive learning experience, providing teachers with valuable opportunities for reflection, collaboration and mutual knowledge exchange. It also highlighted the significant role of social-emotional skills in fostering supportive, empathetic and healthy learning environments where both students and teachers can thrive.
